Beyond the Dream: A Legacy of Nursing at SickKids, commissioned in 2005, is a drama documentary I directed and wrote about the history of nursing at Toronto’s SickKids Hospital.  In the film, Canadian actress, Kate Trotter, beautifully reincarnates Elizabeth McMaster, the woman who founded the Hospital in 1875, and follows her as she enters the modern version of her dream and discovers how nursing practice has evolved during the past 131 years.  Re-enactments, interviews with nursing historians, former nurses and current staff, cinéma vérité footage of hospital activity, archival photographs and films, readings of annual reports from the hospital’s first twenty years, and my own imaginings of McMaster’s memories and responses to SickKids today, are woven together to reveal a complex and inspiring story.  I also composed the central music theme, arranged and played by John Herberman who wrote the incidental music running through the piece. This demo features the film’s opening sequence and the arrival of Maggie, the hospital’s first patient, in 1875.
